Fixing Ball Marks
Ball marks are similar to divots and occur when high shots land on the putting surface and leave an imprint in the turf. These are equally important to fix as a divot. The goal of fixing a ball mark is to bring the healthy turf together. Fix a ball mark by using the repair tool to pull in the healthy turf together towards the center of the mark. This procedure allows the roots of the healthy turf to grow more cleanly, and prevents the green from developing brown spots from damaged turf. At PVCC, we ask that you be deligent in repairing your own ball mark/divot as well as at least one other.
HOW TO PROPERLY FIX A BALL MARK
Our greens need your help!
They have been many unfixed ball marks and also many improperly fixed ones. These significantly diminish the appearance of our greens and interfere with play on them. There is no need for that. Please take the time to read the information set out below and then do your part to help our greens:
Properly fix your ball mark and any others you see nearby.
Walk to the front half of any green if you have time and fix ball marks there. That is where the most damage occurs because that is where the most balls land.
Show others how to do it correctly.
Take charge of your foursome. Make sure they follow your good example.
Most golfers do not fix ball marks correctly. The goal of fixing a ball mark is not to raise the damaged turf back up to the surface (because doing this breaks the roots and the grass dies), it is to pull the healthy turf together. Here is how to do it.
It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:
Insert your divot tool on the outside edges of the pitch mark.
Go around the pitch mark, using your divot tool to push/twist the healthy turf together. Do not lift up – this will tear the roots and the grass will die.
Tamp down the repaired surface so it is smooth enough for you to putt over it.

RESPECTING OUR GOLF COURSES
Just a reminder to all…four particular points that will help our terrific golf course remain in great shape. Help our staff maintain our courses to the level that we’ve become accustomed, which is among the best in the Coachella Valley.
On the Championship Course, golf cart signs are positioned on the course to insure that carts don’t drive past them, damaging the green approaches, which are critical to short game success. Please keep your carts behind these signs.
On the Championship Course, on par 3’s, (with one exception, hole #7) golf carts must stay on the cart path at all times . (With that exception, travel down the right rough is allowed).
If we all repair at least one ball mark…even if it’s not yours, our greens will remain in excellent condition.
If you have a blue flag, you are to stay 30 yards away from a green whether there are golf cart signs directing you or not.
Let’s all practice good golf etiquette with our friends , and be respectful of our terrific Golf Courses.
